Time Tested Natural Remedies
I'm going to show you how to prevent and cure your cold by using time tested proven remedies that come only from nature and good old folk wisdom. The more methods you use the faster you will get better as they work together to bring you back to health. They are listed in the order of importance.
From chicken soup to orange juice, here are the ten time tested proven cures to help you beat your cold during the winter season.
Remedy 1: Chicken Soup
There's nothing like good old fashion chicken soup to help cure a cold; chicken soup is full of minerals and nutrients- organic is the best choice. You can buy organic chicken soup in a can from iherb.com.That's a convenient alternative if you are unable to cook your own, or buy it at a restaurant.
Chicken soup is very effective in relieving the worst of the symptoms and in shortening the duration of a cold (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
Remedy 2: Vitamins C and A
The second best home remedy would be freshly squeezed orange juice. Try to fertilize your orange trees with organic fertilizer, as that is the best for your health. Or you can take Vitamin C at 5-20,000 mg daily. Get it from a natural source and avoid the ascorbic acid variety; the best is derived from rose hips. Vitamin C is good for cold viruses, for kids use the buffered vitamin C (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
Another vitamin to be included would be Vitamin A. Vitamin A is critical during a cold. It is recommended to take 15, 000 IU daily, however pregnant women should not exceed 10,000 IU. Vitamin A heals the inflamed mucous membranes and builds up the immune system (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
Remedy 3: Herbal Supplements
The third method is with herbal supplements. Herbs like an alcohol-free Echinacea are great for boosting the immune system. This helps stimulate your body to undergo its own self healing process. You can also take Echinacea as a hot tea. It's the first thing I do when I have any symptoms of a cold coming on.
Further excellent herbal supplements include papaya, raw ginger, and cat's claw. For a cold you can use green papaya extract; you can buy it as a chewable supplement. Raw ginger boiled into a tea is also good. Cat's claw supplements will also work wonders (Trudeau 2004).
Remedy 4: Zinc
The fourth method is with zinc. You can take it as a zinc lozenge; the dosage is 1 15-mg lozenge every 3 waking hours for 3 days. It says not to exceed 100 mg per day. Zinc also strengthens the immune system. Note: Don't take lozenges that have citric acid, sorbitol, or mannitol (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
Remedy 5: Colloidal Silver
The fifth method is colloidal silver. Silver has a historical use as an anti-virus and anti-plague. People of royal lineage were known to get a blue pigment in their skin due to the use of silver table ware. They called them "Blue bloods," this was because they had excessive silver in their bodies.
A by-product of this was an enhanced immunity to viruses, and plagues. The nobility would survive plagues due to the large amount of silver in their immune system. Not to worry you won't turn blue with quality colloidal silver. Colloidal silver possesses natural antibiotic and antiviral properties (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
Remedy 6: Eliminate Unhealthy Foods from Diet
The sixth suggestion is to eliminate or reduce the intake of certain foods in your diet. You should lower your sugar intake or eliminate it while you are sick. Sugar lowers the immune system and makes you constipated. You want to have a free flowing bowel, so that you can flush out all the toxins that are making you sick. And this goes for milk (regular milk is full of hormones and other additives) as well; get off milk while you're sick. It contributes to mucus and when you're sick, you want to cut down on that.
Remedy 7: Have A Positive State of Mind
The seventh suggestion is to have a good attitude, be relaxed and focused on getting better. I'm a big believer in the power of the mind to heal the body. Focus on healing and on being better rather than on being sick and miserable.
Emile Coue, a French pharmacist and psychologist coined the phrase, "Day by day I'm getting better in every way." Feel free to use that it has worked wonders for many people. You will move towards your mental goal of health and immunity the more you focus on health (Anonymous 2013).
Remedy 8: Stay Moderately Active
The eighth suggestion is to be active. Staying in bed will exacerbate your cold. You may move around inside your home as long as you are well insulated and warm. The motion of the body will loosen up mucus and fluids. Some moderate exercise indoors maybe beneficial as well (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
If it is sunny outside or if you have sun coming through the window -avoid 11am-2pm to prevent sunburn- sit in it, it is beneficial to healing your cold (Trudeau 2004).
Remedy 9: Use Essential Oils
Ninth there are herbs and essential oils that will clear congestion in your body. Eucalyptus oil relieves congestion; you use 5 drops in a hot bath or 6 drops in 2 cups of boiling water and inhale the steam. The red clover will flush out toxins in the lymphatic system that can cause congestion and inflammation (Balch, J. & Balch, P. 2000).
Remedy 10: Eat Edible Mushrooms
The tenth suggestion is to eat mushrooms that have immense immune stimulating benefits. The mushrooms are: maitake, shitake, and reishi. You can eat them as a soup, or individually in a salad or with noodles.
